Attitude Food

Did you know that the foods you eat can completely affect your attitude? And not just what you eat but how you eat? Our hormones are totally in tune with the fuel we put in our bodies. And those lovely hormones dictate our mood. So cool!!!

Here is a great strategy for your afternoon attitude adjustment. It’s sometimes frightening how during that window between 2-6p we can feel irritable, exhausted, unable to focus, or even all of the above, right?

One reason this may happen is because we don’t have a snack in that time frame. This means that our blood sugar crashes (especially after lunch) and can cause irritability. Another reason is that we didn’t choose the right snack….too high in sugar or not enough protein. Again, this totally messes with our blood sugar levels. It causes our bodies to secrete hormones that make us feel tired, foggy and cranky. Um… no thanks!!

Try this out...

Pack a Parfait to eat between 3-5p. What’s in it????

  • 1/2 cup low fat plain Greek yogurt or cottage cheese
  • 1 cup fresh blueberries*
  • 2 tbsp raw walnuts*
  • Sprinkle on some cinnamon!!

Walnuts are a brain food. They trigger our bodies to secrete hormones that heighten our ability to focus. Yogurt and cottage cheese are solid sources of protein that stabilize our blood sugar. Blueberries have vitamins that give us energy, and cinnamon some pretty cool medicinal properties. It triggers the release of serotonin, which is a feel-good hormone. BOOM!!! Afternoon crankiness averted.

*Although walnuts and blueberries are the best, you can replace with pecans and strawberries… OR you can throw the walnuts, blueberries and cinnamon in with a protein shake too if that’s your jam.
