Mindful eating: So "in" right now

Eating mindfully is a total buzz phrase right now (we even recently published a post by Katie Millington of BusyFitCity on the topic last week). But what does it really mean for those of us who don’t have time to contemplate a raisin for five minutes? (Btw, if you don’t know about the raisin mindfulness exercise, check it out here).  

But don't I have to be on a zen retreat to do this?

Eating as mindfully as someone may do while on a retreat may not be realistic for many of us on a daily basis. Nor may our spouses and friends want to spend three hours at the dinner table with us each night, either! So let’s introduce some informal mindful eating that can be implemented into our daily lives, no matter how busy.  

Here are some simple ways to distinguish between MIND-LESS and MIND-FUL eating.

Mindless Eating Mindful Eating
Ignoring body’s hunger/fullness cues Listening to body’s hunger/fullness cues
Eating emotionally Eating when stomach grumbles, or we feel low energy
Eating while standing/running around Eating while seated, thinking about what you’re eating
Eating and multitasking (working through lunch, dinner in front of the TV) When eating, just eating
Never contemplating how the meal got to you Learning where your food comes from and how it was made (or making it yourself!)

 

So, what have we learned?

While the “mindful eating” trend may call to mind a super zen person eating only the best ingredients picked from the farm right outside his or her home, the reality is that we do live, and eat, in the real world-- and the real world is a busy place. But we can take these insights-- slowing down, listening to our bodies, doing one thing at a time, making even small rituals, and considering all that went into our meal on a more regular basis-- to bring more informal mindfulness to our daily meals.
