If you haven't heard of nice cream, then let us fill you in and change your life: it's like ice cream, but made with frozen bananas instead.

It is psychologically crucial to eat foods that make us feel good. Now, this applies to foods that actually make our tummies feel good, as well as foods that make our brains and hearts and souls feel good. Ice cream is one that makes most people’s souls feel good, but not always people’s tummies.

This is often the case with “comfort” or “cheat” foods: they’re often rich, fatty, foods (which is why they’re comforting), but they may not always make us feel great. All part of the reason why it can often be super fun to come up with creative, healthier versions of our favorite treats.

Nice cream is a healthier (vegan) alternative to ice cream, but just as creamy and delicious! Everyone loves ice cream, so we feel we wouldn’t be doing our jobs if we didn’t hit you up with our go-to standard nice cream recipe, so that you can make it and tweak it however you’d like! Added bonus is that bananas are are an epic recovery food! The simple carbohydrates in bananas help to replenish muscle glycogen, the form of carbs stored in muscle tissue that’s used during exercise. How awesome is that?! So here’s the “basic” recipe:

"Nice" cream recipe

Even people that can’t boil water can make this standard version of nice cream. With only 2 ingredients, it's easy to throw together as a last minute dessert. This recipe forms the base of most other nice cream recipes, so it's kinda like the holy grail of nice cream.

  • Peel 2 ripe bananas (you want to see brown spots), cut them into smaller pieces, and put into a freezer overnight.
  • The next day, chuck the bananas into a blender with some liquid (water works just fine, as does milk. My personal favorite is Califia Farms Toasted Coconut Almond Milk). 
  • We recommend starting off by pulsing the bananas or using a low setting, and then moving to a higher speed. When you’re done, it should look like soft serve!

If you want to change the consistency at all, you can always add ice cubes or more liquid. You can add anything else to this recipe that your heart desires to make it different flavors: protein powder (we definitely recommend this for some added lean muscle growth benefits!), nut butter, coconut, cacao powder, berries, chocolate chips, anything. You just made ice cream out of bananas – clearly the possibilities are endless.
